Jack worked in a garage in Kennford. He was also a well known speedway rider, riding for the Exeter Falcons at the County Ground. When he retired from riding he worked on his smallholding in Clapham raising mainly pigs and chickens. He also had an apple orchard from which he made cider, and the local farmers used to come around at cider making time !
His daughter, Sue recalled; My dad was very secret about being in the Auxiliary, I'm sure my mum never knew what he did. One of my sisters was taken down into the dug out by my Dad after the war and she said it was quite small and damp. My brother also went down with his mates as a dare !
Jack watched with interest as contractors started to carve their way through the hillside to create a section of the A38 Devon Expressway during the 1970s. As they got closer to the still stocked OB he warned them they may need to stop and call “someone from the army”. The bomb disposal squad were called. It is, at present, unknown what their actions were but various items ended up in the possession of a Cornish Auxilier.
