In 1938 he appears to have enrolled in the Royal Artillery, service number 1468767.

In 1949 he was charged with failing to return petrol coupons for 129 gallons of fuel and driving without tax or insurance on his Bentley car. He was asked how he could afford the car which he states he paid £23 for.

It is said that Harry Sabbage was a well-known society playboy and an excellent shot. Apparently, he also had a big mouth and was a potential assassination target for another Patrol.

According to Herbert Trelogan (Rolvenden Patrol) Harry Sabbage had a farm at Bethersden: “He was a useless sort of sod. He got into the Army with a commission, Lieutenant, I think. He was discharged from the Army and that’s why he was appointed the job of looking after these Home Guard and Aux Units in the area. I don’t know how large the area was. I did not know who was over him. He was a civilian auxiliary man under the command of a proper Army officer. Anyway, nobody liked him. Bill Hook (Rolvenden Patrol) always said, and I remember this well, that if things came to the worst and blew up, the first thing we would do is shoot him. We used to get a petrol allowance to go training at weekends. Harry Sabbage did not give us the coupons but used to draw the petrol allowance himself and sign our name on the coupons. At one stage I was desperate for petrol and had to go to Cranbrook. When I got there this Captain said I had drawn six gallons in the last two to three months. I said: “I haven’t had any”. He showed me the form and it was not my signature on it. I never heard anymore. It was not long after I went into the Army.”
