Forest nurseryman
The son of William and Ada, he married Annie Bale in 1921. During the war he ran Westacott Nursery, originally his father-in-laws, Herbert Bale's. Hedley was the brother-in-law and great friend of Auxilier Claude Gould. Between their houses, in a cutting, ran the railway line loop which joined Victoria Road (Great Western) Station, with Barnstaple Junction Station. Claude and Hedley used to talk across the cutting.
He served in World War 1 in the 6th Devon Regiment, signing up on 9th September 1914 and serving until 4th September 1919 as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force.
He is recorded as 5 foot 6 inches tall with black hair, grey eyes and a dark complexion.
