Career
After a period with Auxiliary Units, he joined the Army. After basic training, he was among a number of men who joined the Special Air Service. He is known to have served as a Sergeant at the SAS supply depot at RAF Weathersfield. Possibly his experience handling explosives in Auxiliary Units contributed to this posting. It is reported his rapid promotion in the Army was the result of preventing the theft of equipment due to be dropped into France, suggesting he undertook a similar role at the SAS Resupply depot at RAF Fairford between June and September 1944.
