In 1939 he is a Special Constable. 

Made to Sergeant 31st December 1942.

In WW1 he was a carpenter for the railway. He enlisted on 1 May 1915 (aged 24) to Royal Engineers Railway Troops. He was sent to Chatham by mistake so a transfer to Longmoor was requested. In 1916 he was in Egypt and by 1917 was promoted to Corporal. On 11 Aug 1918 he was promoted to Sergeant. 11 July 1919 he volunteered for Army of Occupation in Egypt. In 1918 he was Mentioned in Dispatches and received a 2 Oak Leaf Emblem 4 Sept 1920 as Company Quartermaster Sergeant.

9 Feb 1920 he was stationed in Palestine, after 8 attacks of malaria, he was sent back to Shoreham-by-sea and had 28 days of treatment in Shoreham Malaria Care Centre. In March 1920 he was pensioned off from Army due to malaria. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal 29 April 1922.
