Harry Bateman was the managing director of Wainfleet Brewery, the largest employer in Wainfleet. During the twenties and early thirties, things were very bad for the brewery and at one point he had to lay off the staff. So upset at this he responded by expanding to build a bottling plant and employed the workers again, bought more pubs and even hotels, spurred on by the holidaymakers attracted by Billy Butlins holiday camps, where he obtained the licences to run the bars. Chairman of the East Midland Brewers Association from 1935, he also held several other roles during the war, including being responsible for petrol distribution, being involved in the Wainfleet Water Company and being appointed as Director to the Lincolnshire Standard in December 1944.
