Before the war he was a Territorial Army Lieutenant, commissioned on 19 Jan 1935, into 4th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment, transferring to the Territorial Army Reserve on 1 Jun 1938. He returned to the Buffs on 24 Aug 1939.
He became a Scout Section Officer in Kent, most likely around 1942. His name appears on a document dated 22 Jan 1943 inviting him to The Garth for a meeting, along with Lieutenant FS Platten, the other Scout Section Officer.
It is likely that he returned to his Regiment around April 1943 as the Scout Section personnel were being reduced.
He was mentioned in Despatches for services in North-West Europe on 8 Nov 1945. This was unusual as the remainder of the Regiment was in Italy, Greece and Burma.
He was injured in North West Europe 21 Sept 1945 (after the end of the war) when his jeep overturned and was recorded as dangerously ill in official returns.
He remained with the Royal West Kent Regiment, but relinquished his commission on 24 Jun 1948 on the grounds of disability.
He married Elizabeth Louisa Marguerite Glasier on 9 Dec 1936 at Stonham Aspal in Suffolk. Their first daughter, Susan was born in 1939.
Their first son, Simon, was born at Sevenoaks on 9 Mar 1942
Their second daughter, Penelope, was born on 24 Feb 1944 at home.
They had a second son, Guy, born on 10 Mar 1946 at North Oxford Nursing Home. He also served with the Queens Own Buffs, successor to the Royal West Kent Regiment as a Short Service Officer in the 1960 and 70s
