Biography
Gilbert was awarded the George Medal in May 1942 while his wife Kathleen and her sister Grace Harrison were awarded the British Empire Medal. The London Gazette in announcing the news said; " Mr and Mrs Mitchel and Miss Harrison have made an unexampled effort and shown sustained bravery and devotion to duty in carrying on farming under the gunfire and air attacks of the enemy"
