He was born in Rusholme, Manchester.
On 20 Sep 1915 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment, serving with the 8th Battalion. Later in 1915 he was seconded to the London Regiment. He does not appear to have served overseas. On 1 Jul 1917 he was promoted to Lieutenant. On 31 Jul 1918 he was transferred to the Royal Air Force, serving with the Photographic Expert section at Kenley. On 4 Dec 1918 he was graded unfit for service after a Medical Board and discharged. In 1921 he relinquished his Territorial Army commission.
He married Gladys Holden in 1923
He is buried in St James Churchyard, Rusholme, Manchester. The church was sold as a private residence and the gravestones moved and covered.
