Stourton Caundle Patrol | Patrol Leader | Unknown | Unknown |
Roadman, Dorset County Council
He is the Patrol Sergeant in the Auxiliary Units photo.
A WW1 veteran he was Private 6728 Scots Guards 818 Machine Gun Corps. He was remembered as a proud and upright veteran and known to the locals as "Old Soldier". His military standing sated with him all his life and when he retired he was often seen around the village in conversation with the vicar. When he first went off to WW1 he was a big, fit man. When he returned four years later he was described as skeletal. He regretted his job as a road man after his Army career.
In the 1911 Census he records his place of birth as being The Tower of London and was in 1st Battalion Scots Guards and stationed at Kasr El Nil Barracks in Cairo, Egypt. He was discharged 25 March 1927.
Promoted Lieutenant 1st April 1942 4th Battalion Home Guard. He may have left Auxiliary Units by then.
