In 1939 he was in the British Red Cross Society. A known sportsman he played football and cricket and was a long distance runner, winning the Beacon Chase.
George kept a diary which records a "Regular" Home Guard training session at "Denbies" in Dorking in some detail. He seems to join the Auxiliary Units the following day. He later is more discreet recording a Auxiliary Unit training session at Coleshill.
