Fred had the reputation of being a local poacher. Before he was an excavator driver he was a gamekeeper.
Stan Williams described him as being well-versed in country ways and able to snare rabbits as they were out on exercises. He thought Fred would have been invaluable to supply fresh food in the event of an invasion.
He wife knew what was going on and what his role would have been. After exercises she would often let the Patrol stay over.
