Chief engineer in charge of general engineering works & iron foundry
Fred worked for the family firm of Bishop Bros. Ltd. an engineering firm.
Westcott joined the Royal Navy at around 14 years old, but the Royal Navy found out that he was under age, so they set him home. Later he joined the Army, (around 16 years old) and served during WW1 in the desert as a dispatch rider. His Regiment is unknown at this time, but the family regiment is The Rifles
Fred's grandson has been told that his uncle followed Sergeant Westcott to somewhere between Wellington and the Wellington monument, when Westcott suddenly disappeared, and he could not be found.
There were Sten Sub Machine Guns found covered in original packing grease, and revolvers found under a chicken house at the Westcott’s home, Foundry House, 40 North Street, Wellington in 1977. The site were the chicken house was, is now built on, and it is a retirement home complex.
