His Durham Home Guard record shows he joined them on 25 May 1940. He was discharged on 1 Jul 1941 with his services being no longer required. This appeared in Part II Orders on 1 Oct 1941. The record has him with the HQ Company (Field Party). This may be a code for the Patrol as initially orders were that the men were attached to the HQ company of their local battalion. Later transfers out were recorded in some areas. This may be when he joined the Patrol or reflect a formal removal from Home Guard records. His name appears on a 1942 list of men in Auxiliary Units in the Durham and North Riding area, who do not appear in a larger alphabetical list. He has been allocated to the Elwick Patrol based on his home address.
