In 1939 he is living in Horsham, Sussex and is a Signalman and ARP Warden. During the war Fred was a Stationmaster at Freshwater and had to put pipes under the railway line for explosives.
A WW1 veteran he served in the 51st Battalion Royal Sussex ending up as Temporary Company Quartermaster Sergeant service number 29046. He served from 23 Feb 1916 to 26 Sept 1919; 1916-1918 in England and 1918-1919 in Germany. It is recorded he suffered from defective eyesight and 5 foot 7 inches tall.
