In 1939 he is Group Organiser of Ministry of Transport Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Chichester Area. Ernest had been issued with a special pass allowing him complete freedom of movement.
A WW1 veteran he was Sergeant M2/049272 Army Service Corps. He owned a large engineering firm of E Allman & Co, which exported agricultural equipment. The firm was started by him in his garage in 1919. He was an able mechanic and inventor of new agricultural equipment.
