Ernest had the nick-name "Bungy" and was a carter for Sir Edward Cave at Sidbury Manor for over 45 years. He had a life long love of horses. The son of George and Elizabeth, he married Edith Annie Slade 29 May 1915 in Sidbury.
Pre-war he was a keen member of the local rifle club.
A World War 1 veteran he served in Dardanelles and the Somme. In May 1918 he was wounded in the face and lungs with shrapnel and he was recovering in hospital in London.
