A WW1 veteran he was Private 3116 5th Hampshire Regiment & Machine Gun Corps then 92763 Royal Tank Corps enlisting on 29 March 1915. He was recoded as being 5 foot tall. The nominal roll records his year of birth as 1896.
His son Harry recalled the group photograph was always displayed at his home while growing up, and his Dad wore the shield badge in his lapel, he never explained what it was or the significance of either during his lifetime.
