13 Feb 1903 he signed up as Private 6784, The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment), his home address being Green Lane, Challock. He was 5 foot 4 inches, with dark brown hair, a dark complexion and brown eyes. He had a scar on the right temple. He purchased his discharge 6 Jan 1904.
A WW1 veteran he served in Army Service Corps as Corporal T2/SR/03050 from 19 Feb 1915 to serve in France. He was wounded 4 Oct 1917 by a gun shot wound to the wrist and was demobilized 20 April 1919. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
