Career

He enlisted in the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment on 20 Jun 1940.

His Grandson Wayne recalls: "He did tell me about his time in Sussex. He used to send my Nan eggs in the post to Hackney in East London.  My Nan never told him that they often were off when the arrived as the post was so bad.  He also talked a bit about the 38 S&W pistols, the tommy gun and the OBs.  He also mentioned he was picked for the role as he was considered "un-soldierly!".

After Sussex he was transferred to the 3rd Battalion, The Monmouthshire Regiment (part of the South Wales Borderers) on 4 Mar 1943. It seems he was one of those invited to join the SAS.  According to his grandson, "He was turned down for the SAS as my Nan had just given birth to twins", He would see action at Tuetoburger Wald in April 1945.
