Born in Hanwell, Middlesex he was the son of Edward Thomas and Ada. In 1939 he was boarding on King Edwards Road, Axminster. In 1940 he married Bessie Osborne. He worked most of his life as a vehicle mechanic and inspector.

In February 1943 Edward was fined for incorrect use of petrol rations. His motor cycle had broken down and he claimed it was required for his 'special' Home Guard duties. He was fined 15 shillings.
