Originally from mid Wales, he married Gwendoline E C Wright in Stokeinteignhead in 1935. Don Bird had been a professional footballer before the war having played left wing for Cardiff, Bury, Torquay United (1937) then ending his career at Southend United. He had been a Welsh international player 1929-1930. He was recorded as being 5 foot 8 inches tall.
He retired from football and became a farmer and market gardener, later moving to Blue Waters in Maidencombe.
A 1956 Parish Magazine for the region in which Donald was noted to be residing in Maidencombe. He was referenced as the Senior Church Warden at St. Andrew's Church in Stokeinteignhead, as well as being the Rural-Dean Representative and a senior member of the Church Committee.
