Leiston Patrol | Patrol Corporal | Unknown | 03 Dec 1944 |
Engineer
Corporal Brown was finally awarded the Defence Medal in the 1990s.
Denis was born in Leiston, Suffolk and then moved to Aldeburgh with his wife Stella (nee Mann) where he lived for the rest of his life. Denis worked at Garret's Engineering in Leiston for the majority of his working life and reached the position of Forman at the works. His father was also a Forman at the works.
Hobbies included sea fishing in his early and middle life, winning awards, and tug of war. He also enjoyed his pond on a sunny day which was home to a large amount of goldfish. He would often sit with his Grandson by the pond and look at the fish. The largest gold fish in the pond was called George - his middle name. Another hobby that he enjoyed with his wife was gardening - their flowerbeds and lawns were immaculate. Not a blade of grass out of place. Fitting for an engineer. His Grandson was however told off a lot when he would manage to sneak a football up onto the top lawn.
Denis had two brothers, Harry and Eric. Interestingly Eric was a career soldier for some time and took part in the Pegasus Bridge D-Day glider offensive - Operation Deadstick. Ranville / Horsa Bridge. Glider No.4 A Horsa glider. Lance-Sergeant Brown (249th Field Company) Airborne.
He named a boat that they owned when younger, Pegasus in his honour.
