He could have been evacuated to Plymouth as in 1939 David is at school and living with the Austin family in Roborough along with three other unrelated children. The nominal roll records his year of birth as 1926 but in the 1939 register it is recorded as 1927.
He joined Auxilary Units in March 1944 but was discharged with "services no longer required" by September 1944 having left the district. The Nominal Roll records he was given a "Certificate of Service" dated 23rd January 1945.
