Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) Eastleigh Fleet Air Arm (FAA) from Auxiliary Units in Home Guard records 31 Sep 1941. 

7 Aug 1943 Commissioned Sub Lieutenant (A) RNVR. Posted to the newly formed 1770 Naval Air Squadron at Yeovilton

As an observer on a 2 seater Firefly fighter of 1770 Squadron he was posted to the aircraft carrier HMS Indefatigable on 18 May 1944. On 10-11th August HMS Indefatigable took part in Operation Offspring, along with carriers HMS Trumpeter and HMS Nabob and a protecting force of two cruisers and six destroyers. Its purpose was to drive the German Forces threatening convoys to Russia from the Leads, the area of water near Narvik inside the offshore islands of Norway. 1770 Squadron along with others provided fighter escorts for mine laying, bombing airfields, radar stations, fuel tanks and shipping. David Roberts aircraft, flown by Sub Lieutenant J A Davies, was shot down on 11 Aug 1944 and both men were killed. He is buried in Trondheim.


There is a memorial to David Bennett in the Church of St Nicholas in Moreton. He is one of four Second World War casualties, one of which is his brother Richard, who was killed serving with the Royal Engineers as a Sapper in a Bomb Disposal Company. He is buried at the same church with his brother David also remembered on his gravestone.
