Daniel Bland's exact role is currently uncertain. As a pre-war Territorial he would have been called up at the start of the war and most likely served in some capacity either with a Scout Section or with the HQ staff for Hampshire. It seems he was particularly involved with the Auxiliary Units on the Isle of Wight, although it is not known if he was stationed on the Island or just visited.

Joined the Territorial Army before the war. In the 1939 Register it is listed as his occupation suggesting that he may already have been mobilised, though was at home on the registration date with his parents.
