The son of Francis Ross and Helena Bates, Cyril married Mary Katherine (Dorothy) du Moulin in Feb 1921. She died in 1939 and he married Muriel Barnes in 1952.

A WW1 veteran he served as a Sergeant in the 10th Royal Fusiliers, enlisting 29 Aug 1914. He was discharge as physically no longer fit for service 26 Dec 1916 after a gun shot wound to the head. He is recorded as being 5 foot 9 inches tall with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair
