Clifford recalled that in June 1940 their Home Guard commander at Mendham asked for volunteers for dangerous duty. He was one of eight men who became the Patrol. They were sworn to secrecy.

Shortly before the end of the war, he received a stand down lapel badge.
In 1959, after an article in the Sunday Pictorial about Auxiliary Units, he wrote to give his story, saying that he had never spoken of this before to friends, nor had any of the others in the Patrol.
