In 1939 he was a Special Constable and was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1942. He was awarded an M.B.E in 1954. He was appointed to the Monmouthshire Agricultural Executive Committee in 1939 and was responsible for a good deal of organisation and administrative work in the early days of the war. He was Chairman of its Southeast Monmouthshire district committee and its estate management committee. He had been a county councillor for 20 years up to 1947 and was an agent to the Itton Court Estate for 40 years. He was secretary to Lady Currie's hunt.
