The son of Rev. Charles W Godfrey and his wife Gertrude of Loughborough.

In 1939 Charles was a head teacher living in Thetford, Norfolk and a volunteer at the ARP Report Centre and living at Riversdale, Thetford.

His teacher's registration shows he served in WW1 from 1916 to 1919. He served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in France being wounded once.

He then worked as Assistant Master, Aysgarth School, Newton-le-Willows, Yorkshire 1919-1921, Oundle School, Northampton, 1921-1922, Whitgrift Grammar School, Crydon, Surrey 1922-1930 then The Grammar School, Thetford, Norfolk 1930 until his move to Devon.
