A WW1 veteran he served in France in the Dorsetshire Regiment signing up 19 May 1914. He later transferred to the Devonshire Regiment as a Corporal. He was discharged following multiple gun shot wounds to the head, leg and shoulder. He was recorded as being 5 foot 5 inches with brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion.
