He married Annie Harriet Sumner in 1911.
On 6 Dec 1915 he enlisted in the Army. He is recorded as 5 foot 6 inches. He appears to have been discharged 4 days later with written on his papers 'Discharged. Not likely to become an efficient soldier'. He goes on the enlist in the 225 Corps Army Service Corps as Driver T4/145741 on 13 Dec 1915 where he served in France from 20 March 1916, he was awarded the Victory and the British War medals. Only days later, on 25 March he was on trial for for drunken-ness in the field while on active service and in charge of General Service wagon and mules and was punished with 14 days Field Punishment number 1, which was 14 days of being handcuffed or similar to a fixed object for up to 2 hours a day. By 23 Sept 1917 he was awarded a Good Conduct Badge. He was discharged 18 Feb 1919.
