A WW1 veteran he served in Royal garrison Artillery and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 19 Oct 1916 (153457). He was later promoted to Lieutenant. He entered the theatre of war in France 16 Dec 1916 and was awarded the Victory and British medal.
He was awarded the Military Cross 16 Sept 1918. The citation reads;
2nd Lt Charles Noel King, R.G.A Spec. Res.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a party saving guns. He got one gun out when the enemy were in machine-gun range, and then took charge of another gun, and though constantly sniped at and coming under heavy shell fire he pulled it to a position of safety three miles away without any assistance of tractors.
