The son of John T Burge who was a gardener on the Croydon Estate.
Probate records state that he was last seen alive 1 Oct 1976 and his body was found 12 Oct. He was last seen returning home over a bridge, 200 yards from The Valiant Soldier on Friday night, singing and shouting. The next morning the handrail of the bridge was broken and a search of the flooded river was started. The landlord of the pub commented; "Charlie was a great character. He was very popular in the village. If he has gone it will be a great blow." His body was found 5 miles downstream nearly 2 weeks later.
