The son of Frederick and Alice, Charles married Iris Williams in 1933. They were both members of the Young Persons Bible Class and the choir at the Methodist Church, Wedmore.

Locals remembered a German plane was downed in the Somerset Levels, sometime in 1941. Charlie went to collect the pilot and kept him in his kitchen until he was collected by the authorities.
