Born in Walsham-le-Willows in West Suffolk he was the son of Arthur and Eva and married Sheila M Milward in 1939.
He started his career with his Grandfather, Herbert Gooding of Hill House, Debenham and he continued the manage the farm after Herbert's death until 1945 when he moved to Creeting St Mary to manage several farms. In 1950 he bought the Post Office stores in Wortham. He was held in high regard in the area and was a keen sportsman and footballer.
His obituary notes; "In the 1939-45 war years he was a member of the special section of Debenham Home Guard". The funeral was conducted by Rev Trevor Waller, who the paper states was a Home Guard colleague of Arthur's.
