At an event in Dorchester, on 16 Aug 2014, within sight of Dr Russell-Stevens house, location of the Dorchester Outstation, we were told that one of those bringing information was Arthur C Savage, who was too old for the Armed Forces, but had reportedly served in the resistance.
Arthur Savage had started out working in the officer of Bath and Portland Stone Firms Ltd at Easton on Portland. He was a renowned cricketer, taking over 100 wickets in a season for four year between 1928 and 1931 as a fast-medium bowler. However he was ambitious and left to set up as an insurance salesman in Dorchester. The business he created, across Weymouth and Portland, still exists today. Before the war he ran the Junior club competitions for Dorset County Cricket.
In 1939 he was appointed wartime road transport control officer for Dorchester. After any invasion, this would have given him access to information about where any goods were being transported. After the war he continued to represent the Dorset Road Transport Association.
After the war he would be twice Mayor of Dorchester in 1959 and 1966.
