The son of Henry and Catherine and known by his middle name Austin, he married Ida Wills in 1914. A WW1 veteran he served as Lance Corporal 426797 in the Somerset Light Infantry and later in the Machine Gun Corps. He is described as 5 foot 4 inches tall. He proceeded with the British Expeditionary Force into France 11 July 1917 and transferred to the Army reserve 18 March 1919.
