A WW1 veteran he served as Sergeant 120094 in Lothian And Border Horse Yeomanry. He had enlisted 16 Feb 1912 and was discharged 13 June 1919. He served in France 21Sept 1915 to Nov 1915, Macedonia Nov 1915 to Jan 1919 and Caucasus Jan 1919 to April 1919. He was granted a Good Conduct Badge in 1917. He contacted Malaria in April 1917 and spent a month in Edinburgh War Hospital. He was recorded as being 5 foot 6 inches tall.
In 1950 he received a long service bar for serving as a Special Constable.
