Alf Smith was the District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts. In 1939 he was a Special Constable. He was also a religious man and the local Church Warden.
With Alf being involved with the Auxiliary Units, doing training and attending courses he missed his duties as the Church Warden several times. As a result he was summoned by the Church to appear before the Church authorities to explain why he was failing in his duties. Having signed the “Official Secrets Act” he would not divulge his Auxiliary Unit activities. Not being able to give the Church authorities a satisfactory reason they found against him and relieved him of his role as Warden. For this Alf was very bitter towards the Church authorities for the rest of his day though still maintained his faith.
