Stoborough Patrol

Locality

Stoborough is a village 1 mile south of Wareham.

The Patrol was dominated by the Randall family who had farmed in Stoborough for over a century. There were four members of the family in the Patrol, though the youngest was too young and as soon as this was realised he was discharged.

Operational Base (OB)

The OB is believed to have been within the vicinity of the former Squirrel Cottage Clay Pit. It was discovered by one of the workers at the site, who came across a disguised vertical entrance shaft. Inside was a large room which still contained a table and chairs and the remains of some candles. Beyond this was a smaller room leading to an escape tunnel.

The OB is believed to have been completely destroyed by the expansion of the pit workings. The site is now a one hectare lake with a small central island.

Patrol Targets

Targets are likely to have included the railway lines to the north and west. The road out of Swanage would be a target in the case of landings there. They may also have included the small port at Wareham as a possible target.

Training

East Holme Rifle Range, established in the Edwardian era, was very close to the OB. This was a military 800 yard range (though now in civilian hands) and may have been used for shooting practice.

It is not known if any of the Patrol went to Coleshill House for training, though normally at least the Patrol Leader attended.
