It is known that Limpet mines were issued to some Patrols, especially those near to important rivers eg. Stoke Gabriel on the River Dart in Devon, for use on enemy shipping.
In the War Diary of Military Intelligence (Research) it is stated they were developed by Major M. R. Jefferies and were being produced by November 1939. This relates to the first type which were hemispherical.
The Type 6 Limpet Mines had six magnets, (shown) mounted on rubber bushes and arranged in two rows of three magnets, on a frame, with the explosive in a container in the centre. It was first delivered in Jan 1942.
A full example is displayed at Imperial War Museum.
No documentary evidence of which Limpet mine type was issued to Auxiliary Units has survived.
